The alpine hut, newly built in 2016, is in the middle of the Dolomites and bears the name of the mountain at whose foot it nestles. The Kasseroler family warmly welcomes me to the Plattkofel mountain hut and treats me to delicacies from their own alpine cheese dairy and all kinds of delicacies from South Tyrolean cuisine.
The hut on the Plattkofelalm is open from beginning of June to end of September (beginning of October, depending on weather conditions).
The Plattkofelalm or malga Sassopiatto can be reached via the Alpe di Siusi, Monte Pana, the Sella Pass and Campitello or via the Oskar Schuster via ferrata. The hike to the Sassopiatto follows trail 9. To get to the Plattkofel mountain hut, it takes another 50 minutes from the Williams Hut, which can be reached by chairlift.
A smile appears when I taste the delicious products of the alpine dairy. Fresh cow’s milk and goat’s cheese, the in-house spicy Almkäse (“alpine meadow cheese”) and, last but not least, the mild cream cheese are healthy, wholesome and tasty. There is also a large selection of “speck”, jams and juices to purchase for enjoyment at home!
